Carbohydrates, Insulin and Your Health

By Terrance Franklin

So far, we have gone over the 2 distinct kinds of metabolism, fat or carb based. Exactly what is the distinction between the two of these and why is it essential to survival?

The destiny of hungry cells

During any time, the body will be in a state of carbohydrate or fat metabolism. It will take days to switch into ketosis, and usually over a week for those who have never experienced it before. Due to this, carbs are a good supply of fuel when they are are lots available, but leave you in the cold when you lose access, just like you might in a survival situation.

Let us imagine that you had two twins, one who was in a state of carbohydrate metabolism and one who was in a state of fat metabolic process. Just imagine your tragedy of choice wipes out commercial infrastructure and in three days, there isn't any access to survival foods. Both of them are now in a state of starvation. Let us even say for the sake of the discussion that they are in a state of physical activity, going over land, defending themselves and porting supplies with them. They are expending energy, which has to come from somewhere. In this case, the body.

Metabolic processing of fat

Twin #1 is in a state of fat metabolism. His cells are ready to take ketones as an energy source. In a state of starvation with energy to use, his cells will seek ketones. Luckily, he will have an enormous source of ketones in his body fat. Fat will be converted into usable calories at 9 calories per gram. For the normal person, it is a lot of energy. Taking an average weight of 175 lbs as well as a healthy bodyfat percentage of 15%, this twin will be able to lose 10% of his weight in fat, or 17.5 lbs before it will become unhealthy. This results in nearly 8000 grams of usable fat, which converts into a tremendous 72000 calories before twin#1 begins losing more essential tissue.

Carbohydrate metabolism

Twin #2 has been using glucose as a fuel source. With no carbohydrates to eat, his cells will have to get used to ketosis. In the mean time, it is going to be a difficult move. Some signs and symptoms well known to low carb dieters consist of forgetfulness, tiredness, absence of energy and head aches. During my time with keto diets I even experienced a few terrible migraine headaches too. This will continue for some days, but might be as longer as a week depending upon the dietary record. At the same time, the world may be falling apart and precious time will be lost.

Among the most threatening consequences is the loss of muscle tissue. As you may remember, proteins are quite close to carbohydrates and whenever needed, may be transformed. Because of this, people in a state of carbohydrate based metabolic processes shed more muscle than those in fat metabolic processes. The protein is scavenged and broken down into the preferred fuel source, carbohydrate. In a state of physical exercise, this is all the more likely.

The x factor

While calories may be available, there are important nutrients to be considered for survival. Stay tuned to the other article in the series for the vital nutrients to supplement calories in a starvation state.
